How to Start a Clothing Brand in India: A 9-Step Guide from Idea to First Sale

To start a clothing brand in India, you need a clear niche, a small first collection, a reliable manufacturer, the right registrations and a way to sell. You do not need a large budget or a fashion degree to begin, but you do need the right order of steps. Students in our Diploma in Digital Fashion & Entrepreneurship, part of the School of Fashion at India Learns, Kochi, work through exactly this path and finish with a live online store.

One market research estimate values India’s fashion e-commerce market at US$21.60 billion in 2025 and expects it to reach US$98.45 billion by 2032. Forecasts differ between reports, but they agree that online fashion is growing fast.

Missing a few ticks is normal. The steps below fill the gaps in order.

How do you start a clothing brand in India? The 9-step roadmap

1

Step 1: Which niche and customer should you choose?

Pick one customer and one need before you pick a product. A brand for everyone is hard to market and easy to ignore. Define who they are, what they wear, what they struggle to find and what they will pay.

  • Age group and city
  • Lifestyle and budget
  • Category: kurtas, co-ord sets, streetwear, kidswear, occasion wear, handloom
  • A gap in size, fabric, price or style
2

Step 2: How do you test demand before spending money?

Show the idea to real buyers first. Share sketches or mood boards on Instagram and WhatsApp, run a short poll and ask people to pre-order or join a waiting list. If strangers will not commit a small advance, rework the idea before you order fabric.

3

Step 3: How do you build a brand identity?

A brand is more than a logo. Decide your name, story, colours, packaging and tone of voice, and keep them consistent on every label, post and parcel. Check that the name is free on Instagram, as a domain and in the trademark records before you print anything.

4

Step 4: What should your first collection include?

Start with a capsule collection of a few pieces that work together. A small range cuts risk, keeps stock manageable and shows you which designs sell. For each piece, prepare a sketch and a tech pack, a document that tells the manufacturer the measurements, fabric, stitching and trims.

5

Step 5: How do you find fabric and a manufacturer?

Sourcing decides your quality and your cost. Compare at least three options and always order a sample before a bulk order. India has strong clothing hubs, for example Tiruppur for knitwear and Surat for fabrics, and regional crafts such as Kerala handloom cotton can give a small brand a story of its own.

MOQMinimum order quantity decides how much stock and cash you need.
SampleCheck fit and finish on a real piece before you commit.
Lead timeIt sets when you can launch and restock.
FabricAsk about shrinkage and colour fastness to avoid returns.
TermsAgree payment and return terms for faulty batches in writing.
6

Step 6: Which registrations do you need?

Set up the paperwork before you take orders. Speak to a chartered accountant for your exact case, since rules and thresholds change.

Business structureSole proprietorship, partnership, LLP or private limited company.
UdyamRecognition as a micro, small or medium enterprise, free on the official government portal.
GSTNeeded to charge GST. Sellers of goods on e-commerce marketplaces generally need it regardless of turnover.
Current accountKeeps business money and customer payments separate.
TrademarkProtects your brand name and logo from copying.
7

Step 7: How should you price your clothes?

Start from cost, not from a guess: fabric, making, trims, packaging, shipping, returns and marketing, then your margin, then GST. The next section shows how the GST slab changes the price your customer pays, and has a calculator you can use.

Step 8: Where should you sell your clothes first?

Begin with one or two channels and do them well. Good photos, a clear size chart and simple return rules matter more than being everywhere. Answer these three questions to choose.

1. Do you already have people who follow or know you?
Yes: sell on Instagram and WhatsApp first.
If no, go to question 2
2. Do your clothes need to be touched or tried (fabric, fit, handloom)?
Yes: use pop-ups, exhibitions or tie-ups with local boutiques.
If no, go to question 3
3. Can your pricing and stock handle marketplace commissions and returns?
Yes: list on marketplaces (GST registration needed).
No: build your own website and bring traffic through content.
9

Step 9: How do you launch and keep growing?

Launch in a small batch, track what sells and reorder only the winners. Collect photos and reviews from early customers, share them on your page and use them to plan your next drop.

How does GST change the price of your clothes?

The GST rate on apparel depends on the sale value per piece. Following the September 2025 revision, readymade garments are taxed at 5% up to ₹2,500 per piece and at 18% above that. Rules can change, so confirm the rate for your product’s HSN code before you set prices.

FAQs

How do I start my own clothing brand?

Choose a niche and customer, test demand, build a brand identity, design a small collection with tech packs, find a manufacturer, complete the registrations, price with GST in mind, set up sales channels and launch in small batches.

How much does it cost to start a clothing brand?

There is no single figure. Cost depends on the size of your collection, fabric, minimum order quantity, samples, registrations, photography and marketing. A small capsule collection and pre-orders keep the first investment low. Get written quotes before you decide your budget.

Do I need GST registration to sell clothes online?

If you sell goods through e-commerce marketplaces, you generally need GST registration regardless of turnover. Selling only through your own channels depends on your turnover and state. Confirm your case with a chartered accountant.

What type of clothing is most profitable?

Profit depends more on margin, repeat buying and low returns than on the category. Pick a niche you understand, where customers need something existing brands do not offer, and track your margin on every piece.

Do I need a fashion degree to start a clothing brand?

No degree is required. Skills in design, costing, sourcing and selling matter most. A structured programme such as the India Learns Diploma in Digital Fashion & Entrepreneurship can speed up learning and gives you a launch-ready portfolio.

Can I start a clothing brand with no inventory?

Yes, in two ways. You can take pre-orders and produce only what is ordered, or use made-to-order production. Both reduce stock risk, but delivery takes longer, so set clear timelines with customers.
